What Is a Temperature Controller?
High power temperature controllers maintain a constant temperature (the target) in furnaces and other equipment. Generally, they include a measured input indicator and a setpoint controller. They generate a control signal according to the difference between the indicated value (measured input) and target value, and adjust the temperature to match the target.
To measure the temperature, engineers can connect a variety of sensors such as thermocouples or RTDs. To adjust the temperature, the digital temperature controller can send relay output, current output (4–20 mA DC), or other kinds of output to the control element (such as a heater or valve).

Details
What Are the Benefits of Temperature Controllers?
Improved efficiency and versatility:
- Remote units no longer need to be controlled by basic temperature controllers, PLC, HMI operator interface terminal
- A single hybrid remote temperature controller performs all functions
- Controls and monitors multiple temperature loops
- Acts as mini-PLC
- Provides operator interface functionality
- Loop control
- Self-tuning and basic AI algorithms
- Advanced temperature controller functions such as ramp-soak
- Suitable for the most demanding temperature control applications
- Performance exceeds that of separate PLC
What Are the Industrial Applications of Temperature Controllers?
Temperature controllers can also be used in non-temperature applications such as flow or pressure, and such devices are called indicating controllers.
Resources
Aerospace Material Specification AMS2750F defines the requirements for thermal processing equipment used in metal heat treatment applications. It covers temperature sensors, control and recording instrumentation, system accuracy tests, and temperature uniformity surveys. Shops that adhere to the standard can confidently heat treat components used in a wide range of aerospace, transportation, and other industries that demand traceable quality procedures for heat treatment.
The TC series of temperature controllers is perfect for controlling the heating temperature of sealing parts and the temperature of sealing rolls (pre-heating) in a variety of different wrapping machinery.
Any steel part subjected to sliding or rolling requires a hard surface (high carbon content) to resist surface wear. Since most steel parts need to be soft (low carbon content) to allow them to be formed (forged, stamped, cut, etc.) into their desired shape, the hard surface needs to be added after the part is formed.
In many different types of industries and applications, measuring and controlling temperature is vital for ensuring quality and safe operations. Temperature controllers are used in research laboratories, product development centers, process plants and other industrial settings.
Today's hybrid temperature controllers can replace a basic temperature controller, a mini-PLC and an operator interface terminal in many applications. This cuts costs, saves space and simplifies systems by using one device to perform multiple functions.
