Integrity of Offshore Wind Subsea Power Cables
Customer Challenge
Subsea power cable failure is frequently reported as an issue for offshore wind farm operators.
Subsea power cable failures are reported to account for 75-80% of the total cost of offshore wind insurance claims. In comparison, cabling makes up only around 9% of the overall cost of an offshore wind farm.
Solution
Using Yokogawa's Distributed Temperature Sensing Technology DTSX and CI Server SCADA, the temperature of the power cable is monitored continuously and in real-time, along its entire length enabling hotspots and temperature anomalies to be located and investigated. The temperature information provides insight into underground distribution conditions, MV, HV and EHV, and subsea power cables.
Subsea power cable temperature data is collected in real-time to detect anomalies from normal operating conditions, including variable loads, the time to an over-temperature event or the amount of current supplied through the cable before overheating can be predicted. This informs network investment planning as well as maintenance scheduling to minimise failures.
Decisions about increasing the current or deferring cable replacement are made, safe in the knowledge that the cable is operating within safe temperature limits. This maximises existing OPEX and saves on CAPEX.

Control, Monitoring and Safety Systems for Offshore Wind Substations
Customer Challenge
Offshore Substations connect the wind farm generating assets to the onshore transmission grid. The substation is one of the most critical structures in an offshore wind farm. The energy produced by the wind turbines is collected at an offshore wind substation and converted by transformers to a high voltage transmission system. If a fault occurs, such as a fire, power black-out or an undesired situation, an emergency shutdown of systems on the substation platform might be required. This would result in all wind turbines in the offshore wind farm not producing and exporting the power produced.
Solution
Operators of offshore wind substations require high-quality systems which provide real-time visibility of substation systems and minimise the consequences of emergency situations that might compromise the operation of the substation.
