Yokogawa Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6841) announces the release today of a white paper titled “Future Scenario 2040: Shaping Horizons of Uncertainty.” Prepared by the company’s Future Co-creation Initiative, the white paper is intended to serve as a tool for promoting dialogue between companies and other organizations that are working to address social issues.
The Future Co-creation Initiative is a cross-organizational virtual team reporting directly to Yokogawa’s president. Made up of employees in their mid-20s to early 40s, it builds co-creation networks with external parties, addresses social issues through dialogue, and fosters the development of a next generation of leaders. The “Future Scenario 2040” white paper has been prepared in cooperation with Waseda University’s Institute of Governance & Sustainability and Everest Group, a global research company. The aim is for this to serve as a catalyst in promoting dialogue and co-creation activities with an eye toward the future at companies, public institutions, and other organizations, spanning multiple industries and fields of expertise.

In 2022, the Future Co-creation Initiative published a white paper titled “Future Scenario 2035: A Journey Through Time” that focused on the B2B sector and the future of the manufacturing industry*. With the “Future Scenario 2040” white paper, the scope has been widened to also cover the B2C sector, which includes consumers and society as a whole. Based on important societal, technological, economic, political, and industry factors, several predictable megatrends and two highly uncertain and impactful scenario drivers were identified. By combining these, four different scenarios for the year 2040 were drawn up.
“The Future Scenario 2040 white paper draws on diverse global perspectives and will support activities needed to prepare the way for a sustainable society,” said Jusuke Ikegami, Professor and Dean of Waseda Business School. “Young Yokogawa employees have played an active role in this, which will contribute to their growth.”
Jillian Walker, Vice President at Everest Group, stated, “Building scenarios offers a view into multiple plausible futures, encouraging industry participants to coalesce around driving innovative approaches that address global challenges. By starting the conversation and asking important questions, Yokogawa is playing a key role in motivating action to better anticipate the future and build cross-industry resiliency.”
“Motivated by Yokogawa's Purpose, which states, ‘Utilizing our ability to measure and connect, we fulfill our responsibilities for the future of our planet,’ the Future Co-creation Initiative has engaged in scenario planning activities that promote the development of a new generation of leaders and build value co-creation networks externally,” commented Masataka Tomonaga, a Yokogawa Vice President & Executive Officer and head of the Human Resources and General Affairs Headquarters. “We believe that these efforts will lead to human capital management practices that maximize the potential of individual employees and support the creation of innovations that pave the way for the realization of a sustainable society.”
