Indonesia, like several Southeast Asian nations, has established climate objectives, with a target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060. Currently, renewable energy accounts for 13% of the electricity mix and is projected to rise to 23% by 2025. However, coal remains the primary source of electricity, making up 61% of power production, and is expected to increase until 2027. This underscores the significant challenge Indonesia faces, along with other regional countries, in accelerating the energy transition to meet net-zero goals.
Indonesia possesses vast renewable energy resources, with an estimated 3.7 terawatts (TW) available according to IRENA. Solar photovoltaic (PV) represents the largest potential at nearly 3 TW, followed by offshore wind at around 600 GW. Despite this potential, the key question remains: how can these abundant renewable energy resources be effectively developed and integrated into the energy system?
This workshop, held during the Electric & Power Indonesia 2023 exhibition, aims to address this question by presenting, sharing, and discussing strategies to expedite Indonesia's energy transition. The focus is on leveraging existing technologies and solutions to enhance energy efficiency and incorporate more renewable energy into the system. Discussion topics include Indonesia's energy outlook, energy planning, district cooling, and other innovative technological solutions aimed at achieving energy efficiency targets and ultimately reaching net-zero carbon emissions, including in the new capital of Nusantara.
The Electric & Power Indonesia 2023 allows engaging with leading energy experts and learn from their experiences in developing sustainable urban energy systems to support Indonesia's energy transition.
