With the advent of the next-generation optical transport network that provides the foundation for building up a Next Generation Network (NGN), a 40-Gbit/s class ultra-high-speed and large-capacity DWDM system is entering into the phase of commercial development. In order to realize 40-Gbit/s WDM long-distance transmission, to respond to a growing number of data packets, and to improve transmission efficiency and economic efficiency, various technologies are being developed and compatibility testing for diversifying services is underway. In order to help evaluate next-generation optical transport systems, we have developed 40-Gbit/s Next-generation optical IP Transport Analyzer, which responds to the new Optical Transport Network (OTN) testing needs, such as optical phase shift keying, 10-Gbit/s Ethernet direct mapping, and enhanced FEC, in addition to basic SONET/SDH testing.

We have added a harmonics current/flicker measuring function to the WT3000 Precision Power Analyzer with world-leading accuracy of power measurement. We have also created PC software for harmonics current/flicker measurement. This PC software and the WT3000 comply with the IEC61000- 3-2 harmonics current standard and IEC61000-3-3 voltage fluctuation/flicker standard, thus enabling the electrical power, harmonics current and flicker of electrical equipment to be measured precisely with a single unit. This paper outlines the harmonics current standard and voltage change/flicker standard, along with the measurement principle and PC-based software of the WT3000.

We have developed the AQ6375 grating-based desktop optical spectrum analyzer, which can measure an optical spectrum over a wide wavelength range from 1.2 to 2.4 m with high wavelength resolution at high speed. Despite the popularity of desktop optical spectrum analyzers in the telecommunication wavelength region, a large-scale optical spectrum measurement system with a monochromator has commonly been used for measuring the long wavelength region, and so there was a need for a desktop optical spectrum analyzer for long wavelengths. Deep optical absorptions appearing in the long wavelength region around 2 m caused by CO2, NOX and H2O are attracting attention in the environmental and medical fields, and thus sensitive measuring equipment by laser absorption spectroscopy using a near infrared semiconductor laser is becoming more popular. With excellent optical spectrum measurement capabilities (high resolution and high speed), operability and maintenance performance, the AQ6375 optical spectrum analyzer will contribute to the performance improvement and spread of near-infrared semiconductor lasers used in laser absorption spectroscopy.

This paper describes new technologies we have innovated for the CSU-X1 series Yokogawa confocal scanner unit. They are enhanced features such as high-speed image acquisition and low phototoxicity and photobleaching based on the microlens-enhanced Nipkow disk method popular for live cell imaging, thus achieving the world’s highest scanning speed of 0.5 ms/frame, better light efficiency, and higher resolution. In addition, we have provided various peripheral devices such as high-speed filter wheel, by-pass optics, and second camera port, realizing various system configurations to meet the needs for multiwavelength measurement.

Since the decoding of the human genome, “Genome-based Drug Discovery” based on molecular-level analysis of deceased people has been gathering considerable expectation. However, the currently low chance of proceeding to clinical trials poses as the topmost task in the development of new drugs. Given this circumstance, we have started to develop a prototype of a drug discovery test system to offer solutions for reducing development time and costs for the genome-based drug discovery process. This system administers chemical compounds that serve as potential candidate drugs into live cells, which are the most basic components of all living organisms, records the changes in the amount and/or localization of target molecules inside cells with our highly sensitive CCD camera, and processes and quantifies the captured high-resolution image data. This screening method enables the drug efficacy and adverse drug reaction of the candidate chemicals to be verified and the candidate drugs to be confirmed in live cells. This paper describes on a typical elemental technology that composes the Test System.

Real-time management by evaluating the current on-site activities is crucial to maximize the customer’s management efficiency and corporate value. The ideal form of real-time management is the ideal plant where all plant operations are perfectly optimized. In 2005, we launched the VigilantPlant concept to achieve this ideal plant. The mission of VigilantPlant is to maximize the customer’s corporate value by continuously increasing the growth potential and productivity of each customer by supplying a solution (Operational Excellence) which increases operation efficiency.

Our newly developed CENTUM VP is an integrated next-generation production control system to attain the purpose of VigilantPlant. The functions of CENTUM VP cover a wide range such as plant resource management, safety control, and operation control, not only the process control of conventional DCSs. This paper describes the concept and system architecture of CENTUM VP.

A more expressive rich graphic screen has been demanded in DCS (Distributed Control System) field according to a marked advance of the information technology and popularization of PC in recent years. Our new CENTUM VP Graphic system was fully reformed on the basis of the new concept of new operation style of CENTUM VP.

Each of our former products has its own graphic system. But many features of those graphic systems can be shared among all products. CENTUM VP Graphic system integrate those common features and provide them as common modules in order to provide the same look & feel and operation. Also it is designed with very high flexibility and extensibility so that it will be reused by future products.

We have developed two models of CENTUM VP I/O modules dedicated for turbomachinery controls, so that CENTUM VP will be capable to perform the high-speed turbomachinery control actions which are almost impossible by the legacy products of DCS (Distributed Control System). By installing these modules in CENTUM VP platform, a CENTUM VP system can be used as a high-speed turbomachinery control system with the same reliability that the legacy distributed control systems of CENTUM series have been reputed for. Moreover, since the sales of new modules is carried out along with the sales of DCS systems, the current engineering and maintenance services can be fully utilized for the services of the turbomachinery control systems. This paper will introduce the typical features of the turbomachinery control applications integrated in the CENTUM VP systems and the features of the above I/O modules dedicated to the turbomachinery controls.

In recent years it has become increasingly common for plants to be provided not only with the control layer of a production control system (DCS, etc.), but also with the protection layer of a safety instrumented system (SIS) to reduce the risk of industrial accidents.

The safety instrumented system is indispensable for avoiding risks to a plant failure. Inevitably, however, the system rarely operates in an actual plant and operators have few chances to use it, so a training system for operators has been strongly awaited. We have therefore developed a simulation environment that offers integrated training through which operators can learn how to handle both DCS and SIS properly in the event of a critical situation.
