Background
In recent years, how to integrate diverse human resources, improve job satisfaction, and thus enhance employee engagement has become a major theme in ESG management. Ways of helping employees gain a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction include point-awarding systems and appreciation scores.
Yokogawa has been developing core technology to measure the attitude and behavior of workers in an organization, as well as a function to help managers design incentives for employees based on behavioral data.
Technology
The first requirement of the core technology is to encourage community members to behave properly and visualize the results. The second requirement is to make the collected behavioral data available to the manager so that he/she can intervene in the community whenever needed to keep it active. To satisfy both these needs, we have developed a programmable token and a system for collecting behavioral data. They have the following features.
- Tokens are given as an incentive to community members for good behavior.
- Blockchain technology guarantees the authenticity of the collected behavioral data.
- Incentives can be designed based on the behavioral data to encourage positive behavior.
In collaboration with a customer, we started a field test of this system on October 29, 2021 (as described elsewhere, “Conducting a Demonstration Experiment of a Token System to Visualize Behavioral Characteristics of Plant Construction Workers”).
The system made it possible to visualize the behavior and attitude of construction workers and their supervisors and the degree of activity at the site. This information helped the manager to take action at appropriate times to change the behavior of the workers and invigorate the site. As a result, 60% of the workers took good actions on their own and 70% of the supervisors noticed positive changes at the site.
Vision for the Future
We are creating a system that will help increase employee engagement and activate the organization. By measuring a broader range of behavior, we will visualize and digitize performance and results that are currently not being evaluated. Conventionally, organizational management and its improvement have relied largely on individual experience and gut feeling. Digitizing such data will ensure continuous, appropriate organizational improvement. We also aim to build and operate a token economy*, which encourages behavioral changes of members in multiple organizations, not just one organization.
* Token economy: An economic zone created by circulating tokens or other non-monetary value.
