What is the expected lifetime of a pH sensor?

Sensor lifetime is difficult to predict as it is dependent on a number of different factors such as pH value, temperature, pressure, the composition of the process liquid, maintenance activity is taken, storage conditions, and sensor handling. To achieve optimal operational life for a sensor, always follow the recommended guidelines for storage and maintenance and be sure to take appropriate precautions for installation and operation of the electrode as outlined in its respective instruction manual.

Some actions that can be taken to extend sensor lifetime include:

  • Cleaning the sensor as needed with 5-10% HCL solution, especially if the response time becomes sluggish. Follow the recommended guidelines for cleaning outlined in the attached document.
  • Following the storage and maintenance guidelines detailed in the attached document.
  • Taking steps to protect the pH glass from solids in the process that could damage the glass.
  • Keeping process temperatures low whenever possible as high process temperatures can greatly reduce sensor lifetime.
  • Ensuring the sensor remains wetted at all times.
  • Selecting the best sensor for your application.
