Wurldtech Recognizes Robustness of CENTUM CS 3000 R3
and ProSafe-RS Against Cyber Attack

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that tests conducted by Wurldtech Security Inc. have conclusively shown that its CENTUM CS 3000 R3 Integrated Production Control System and ProSafe-RS Safety Instrumented System offer robust protection against cyber attacks.

The CENTUM CS 3000 R3 and ProSafe-RS systems play an important role in supporting the oil, natural gas, water, and electric power generation infrastructure on which many people depend for their livelihood. However, the threat of cyber attack increases as more companies turn to IT solutions and employ Ethernet as their control network. To prevent cyber attacks, network security tests for control systems are required more than ever.

Wurldtech's Achilles offers rigorous security and quality assurance tests that are specifically designed for addressing network vulnerabilities in control systems. Wurldtech verifies that the CENTUM CS 3000 Field Controller (FFCS) and ProSafe-RS Safety Controller are well designed systems offering robust protection against cyber attacks. From February 5 to February 16, 2007, Wurldtech Labs used the Achilles Assurance Platform to assess the security of the CENTUM CS 3000 FFCS and the ProSafe-RS Safety Controller at the Wurldtech offices in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The purpose of these tests was to determine the robustness of the controllers against a variety of Ethernet and TCP/IP level and Vnet/IP protocol level cyber attacks. Wurldtech commented that the CENTUM CS 3000 FFCS and ProSafe-RS Safety Controller have stable and robust network stacks and that they passed all Achilles V1.2 tests.

This commissioning by Yokogawa of a third party organization to perform vulnerability testing is in response to recent trends, and the company has obtained a report that objectively proves its systems' capabilities. This vulnerability testing has verified the soundness of the systems by actually attacking the communication interfaces of the system controllers. Thus, the critically important control function of Yokogawa's systems has been proven to have sufficient robustness against cyber attack.

As a manufacturer of control systems that support critical infrastructure, Yokogawa will continue to respond to the needs of its customers by developing technologies that strengthen security.
